Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be in band and another activity?

YES!

We currently have members of the band that are also involved in Varsity Football, Soccer, Tennis, Swim, LCHS Sweethearts, Liberty Dolls, and Piano. Many students also attend the GRCTC for specialized STEM courses and are enrolled in Advanced Placement or Dual Credit classes. We have a very positive relationship with athletics and other fine arts departments, and there has never been a conflict of activities that we could not work out. We recognize how difficult it can be to participate in multiple electives, but our philosophy is to provide the band experience to as many students as possible.

Is marching band scary?

Marching band is new, but you will have plenty of time to acquire and master all the skills necessary to have a great performance (and have a great time, too)! Everyone is involved in the marching band’s production at the level best suited to their ability and experience. Our goal is that as you go through your four years in high school band that you are able to take on added responsibilities as you grow!

How much time does band take?

The summer band and fall schedule can look intimidating, but we rehearse more in July and August so that once the school year starts, students can both maintain their grades and participate in band. Once school begins, rehearsals after school begin at 4:00 pm in order to allow students to take full advantage of tutorials. With all of your hard work, you receive an elective, fine arts, AND physical education credit! Marching band usually lasts until the first week of November, but then the time commitment drastically decreases. Sectionals will be required once a week during concert season and full band rehearsals may be necessary at the director’s discretion.

How are students placed in the different concert bands (i.e. Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Band)?

All students are placed in a band class based on auditions that occur in May of the prior school year. If a student demonstrates that they are playing at a level of a different band class, we will adjust their placement at the semester break in December; this will be determined partially by director observation and partially by All-Region placement. Percussion students will audition during the fall semester to determine their band placement for the spring.

Can I participate in band for only one semester?

NO; we require all band and guard members to participate in both the fall and spring semesters unless extenuating circumstances prevent you from full participation. Please contact a LCHS director for more information.

What should I do if I have a conflict with a rehearsal or performance?

Generally, attendance at all football games, performances, and rehearsals is mandatory. It is a general policy of Garland ISD that graded extracurricular activities take precedence over work, select sports, college visits, or any other out-of-school activity. We make our calendar available well in advance to allow you to schedule appointments, SAT testing, or college visits around our rehearsal and contest schedule. If you do have an unavoidable conflict with any band events, contact a LCHS director immediately. Early communication is key!
